The bus that we lost the engine in was one year off of warranty @150,000 km. International said they would replace the engine for $43,000.

Most likely your engine was made in 2012, probably has the older DPF, needs a new DPF and several ECM changes which have been made to enhance the DPF life. The newer DPF is less restrictive. The possibilities are endless. International once had a great rep for service, the Maxxforce series changed that for certain.
