The regen can be started by the engine computer during driving but sometimes it isn’t enough possibly because of start and stop driving in the city or oil and fuel over the normal level causing a blockage. If the diesel engine is using oil or has faulty fuel injectors the DPF won’t take long to have an abnormal restriction.Some folks eyeball their mpg values on the dash and use them to suspect when a regen is occurring. An active regen, at least on both my 2014 and 2017s, smells like burning rubber if you stop the truck while it’s doing it. I’ve parked the 2017 during a regen and seen smoke wafting up from under the DPF before.

My 2011 EPA 07 DD15 runs ok until it regens, then it loses all boost unless you are on a hill and pounding it, during steady flat ground cruising you can hear the throttle valve slam shut and then the boost dies.
